What the Route 66 means to U.S., the road 409 means to Slovenians. Before the A1 motorway was built this was “The Road” most Slovenians used to travel to the coast for their summer vacation. Perhaps that’s why it grew so close to our hearts, but I suggest you take it as the A1 alternative simply because the road is well maintained, with nice scenery, and sparse traffic. It offers plenty of opportunities to switch to A1 in case you accidentally caught a glimpse of the clock.
To ride from central Slovenia on edge of Karst (or reverse) we can recommend also nice narrow roads, avoiding highway’s heavy traffic and cities’ traffic jams. The route starts on leaving highway E61 (Ljubljana-Koper) on Logatec exit and leads on local roads to highway H4 to Ajdovščina (the highway to Nova Gorica). It’s 62km long. The route is nice for a slow ride to enjoy the landscape.
Slovenian Karst is wonderful. But a part of it is a hidden underground world, full of unbelievably beautiful scenes. Some caves from this part are known from the Homer’s times (Ancient Greece 10th century BC).
When you will be riding and discovering Karst, we can recommend you to visit “Hiša posebne sorte”.. This is Sorta family restaurant with a hotel in the middle of beautiful Karst nature, just a few hundred metres out of village Kordeti and surrounded by meadows, fields and forest.
At Mrzlek take 405 thru Gornje Vreme to Vremski Britof. At Vremski Britof turn left and take 940, cross the river Reka (“Reka” in Slovenian means river) to 409.
Once at 409, you can follow it left to Portorož. Or take the nearby A1 motorway.
If you want to stretch your legs after a long journey or you simply want to stroll through the old romantic Karst village, I recommend visiting Štanjel. Štanjel is a typical Karst village on top of a small hill with stone buildings and gritted streets because of the winter wind and summer heat.
The old typical Karst’s village house had been beautifully renewed. They offer excelent food in romantic ambience. On 1st floor they have guest rooms. So, if you wish to eat well, drink excelent wine and overnight in village silence, this should be one of the best spots.
If you wish to overnight in total silence of Karst village, you should visit Pri Živcovih. And taste their excelent Prshut and Teran wine made in-house with top care and old recepies.
Small nice hotel with good cousine, very close to highway, easy to reach. Close to town Sežana, which is just above the Italian border and Trieste.
Are you looking for the ultimate culinary experience? Then you need to visit the mansion Zemono. The restaurant Pri Lojzetu run by Mr Tomaž Kavčič, international award winner many times, he learned as a young man from his mother Kati. If someone loves the work in the kitchen so much as Tomi does, he is a happy man.
